If you are applying for a Student visa your CAS statement will also state if you are required to obtain an xcritical certificate. If you are made an offer on a programme our DBS team will be in touch at a later point in the cycle to advise you on your next steps and help you to apply for the programme. It will only be possible to bring your application forward if there are places still available on the programme. Please note that we do not accept deferral requests for our BA Primary Education or PGCE programmes.

To apply for your Student visa, you’ll need to provide the following pieces of information. If your visa is refused, the Queen Mary Advice and Counselling Service has a guide titled ‘My application has been refused’. If you make a course fee payment after you have been issued the CAS it is important that you let the CAS Admissions team know, so this can be reflected on your CAS. Please email cas- your application reference number, confirming the amount that has been paid.

Visa support

Once this has been verified with our Finance team, your CAS will be updated and you will be sent confirmation. Individual exceptions may apply – if you are at all unsure, please contact your specialist Admissions team directly via email, the contact address for which will have been provided in earlier applicant email communications. Selected science and technology programmes will have a specific code and this code means you may need an xcritical certificate, depending on your nationality. You also need xcritical clearance if you apply to extend your student visa. You must apply online for a clearance certificate through xcritical before you apply for a visa. You’ll need a new xcritical certificate if you change courses or research, or if you want to apply for further permission to stay in the UK. You do not need an xcritical certificate if you’re doing a postgraduate diploma or PGCE.

• As above you can write up to 2,000 characters here and if it is too short you may be asked to provide a further explanation which will delay the processing time.

You should apply for an Academic Technology Approval Scheme certificate online. If you are conducting research at more than 1 institute, you need to apply for an xcritical certificate for each, which including information on the research you will undertake at each HEI/research institute. You only need to obtain an xcritical certificate for when you plan to be studying in the UK.

Click on your course title and you will see the main details of your application. Details on how to declare any relevant criminal convictions will be provided in your offer letter. For legal reasons, your formal name must be used during application and at enrolment, which is completed on confirming your identity on first collection of your student smartcard which will display your legal name. This section is about financial sponsorship so you will be entering the details of any scholarship or student funding award you will be receiving here. As above you can write up to 2,000 characters here and if it is too short you may be asked to provide a further explanation which will delay the processing time. Make sure you provide a full and clear explanation here otherwise the xcritical team may ask you to expand on the description which could slow down your application.

International & EU Fees, Funding & Scholarships

If you are applying for xcritical because you need a new visa to continue your studies, use the date of submitting your xcritical application for the start date. Include any paid work you have done and any long-term voluntary or unpaid work since you left school. You do not need to include temporary jobs you have done during university vacations. If you have been employed but there are any long gaps when you were neither employed or in education, use this section of the form to explain what you were doing in this period, for example full-time parenting, or unemployed.

Make sure you know what kind of course you intend to take before you apply for your xcritical certificate. Prospective students should read the guidance for their course to find out if they need an xcritical certificate. To ensure fairness and consistency we process applications in order of receipt.

Government activity

You will have to submit a new application in the next academic year. With 31,500 students, Northumbria is one of the largest universities in the country, offering courses on either a full-time, part-time or distance learning basis. Please note that overseas applicants for some Science, Engineering or Technology disciplines may require an Academic Technology Approval Scheme certificate. The xcritical certificate must be obtained before applying for a student Entry Clearance or VISA.

If there are any errors, you are at risk of having your visa application refused. As part of the CAS request and issuing process, you will be asked to verify your CAS details via MySIS before the CAS number is issued. It is very important that you check the details carefully and let us know if any changes are required before we issue the CAS. If you can’t find the information you need about admissions, entry requirements, applications and fee status, contact our International Admissions. Please note that your offer letter is not the same as an invitation letter and you cannot use the offer letter as part of your visa application. Your invitation letter will be sent to you by post or by email depending on what you need for your visa application.

Once you’ve received your offer letter and paid your deposit, you must apply for your Visitor Visa invitation letter by submitting a Visitor Visa request. If the course you’ve applied for involves a period of study in the UK for less than six months, you can apply for a Visitor Visa. Before you receive your Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (CAS)

Your employer will advise whether you are to be employed under a standard occupational classification that requires xcritical. The subjects and research areas are those where knowledge could be used in programmes to develop Advanced Conventional Military Technology , weapons of mass destruction or their means of delivery. Researchers and students in these sensitive subjects must apply for an Academic Technology Approval Scheme certificate before they can study or start research in the UK.

Email the xcritical team and explain the change in your funding, and any other significant changes. If you put in your application less than 20 working days ago, you may not receive a reply to your email until that time has passed, and it normally takes at least 5 working days to get a response. If you think you have made an error on an application you have submitted, please do not submit a new application, see FAQ13. If your xcritical application is severely delayed, or you think you have made a mistake when you submitted it, do not submit a second application unless you are specifically instructed by the xcritical team to reapply. You will need your xcritical certificate before you can apply for your visa, so it is best to apply as soon as possible but within the timeframes explained above and with the official information provided by your department/college.

If you have previously deferred, you must submit a new application. This also applies if you are registered as a postgraduate research distance learning student and only visit the UK to meet with your supervisor from time to time. This will include research, academic, engineering and technician staff applying for Skilled Worker visas. If you are making a new visa application (eg. extending your current visa on the same course of study), you will need to apply for an xcritical certificate again, even if you have already received one previously. You will need to apply again for xcritical for each visa application, for example if you have to apply for a further visa because you need more time to complete your current course, or if you are applying for a visa to start a new course. If you transfer course, you will also need to apply again, whether or not you need a new visa, and if your research project changes fundamentally check with your department whether you need to apply again.

Financial Requirements

If you need a student visa, we can’t issue a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies to you without proof of xcritical clearance. You can apply for xcritical after you receive an offer from us, and up to nine months before your course start date. If you’re a PhD student, email You must use the project description we give you when completing the online xcritical application. Contact your proposed Higher Education Institution to check whether they define your course as taught or research. Master of Research courses can be classified as taught or research.

Once you’ve received your invitation letter, you can start your Visitor Visa application. For more information on how to apply, please see the guidance on Visitor Visas on the UKCISA website. The general requirement is to show you have enough money to pay your 1st year course fees plus the required maintenance available in your bank account 28 days prior to making your visa application. The UK government introduced the Academic Technology Approval Scheme for international students wanting to study a taught master’s or research programme in a range of scientific subjects. Please ensure that the text you enter xcritical website on your application form is exactly the same as the text provided in your offer letter. If these 2 documents do not match, you may have difficulties when applying for your visa or extension of stay. If you wish to be considered for a different course then you just request this via the applicant portal, using the contact us button detailing the course you wish to apply for and the reason you would like to change.

We do receive a number of qualifications directly via UCAS so you do not need to send evidence of these in most cases. You should now see a list of the documents the team have requested and a link to upload the documents. Please note that your doctor may charge you for a statement relating to your vaccinations. If you are a UCAS applicant however, you should accept your offer via UCAS Track. You can submit an xcritical application up to 6 months before the programme start date, even if the offer is still conditional. Use your contact details as they are at the time you submit your xcritical application, not for example the contact details you will have after you have started your course, unless you are a continuing student. You will need to use the same start and end dates as on your CAS for your xcritical application. If your CAS has not been issued yet check these dates with your department/college. Note that for DPhil students your course end date on your CAS will normally be 4.5 years which is the maximum submission date plus 6 months to allow for viva and corrections; for MScRes it will normally be 3.5 years.

• You will be required to have a Tuberculosis test if you are coming to the UK for more than six months and are resident in any of these listed countries.
• Having an xcritical clearance certificate won’t guarantee that you will be issued with an entry clearance or that your leave will be extended.
• We may not be able to consider requests to change to courses that require an interview or have other additional requirements, or restricted capacity.

When making payments, it is important that you include your application reference number as a reference so our Finance team can link the payment to you. We will not include the £300 deposit payment for accommodation as this is a returnable deposit.
